When neurons communicate, electricity is generated and waves of vibration occur in your brain. The frequency of these brain waves can be measured by an EEG. Your brainwaves are constantly changing, according to what you’re doing and feeling. When slower brainwaves are dominant you feel more dreamy this is the alpha state. When the higher frequencies are present, you feel wired, or hyper-alert, this is the beta state.
Due to the nature of our go getter culture, we mostly live in the beta state and we have forgotten how to get to the alpha. Beta reflects high activity in our prefrontal cortex, our analytical mind. This conscious thinking is highly energetically demanding. And if we don’t regularly take a break, and go to alpha to process what we have learned, our mental battery runs low and our survival center, our amygdala takes over. This causes stress chemicals like adrenaline and cortisol to be released and these chemicals actually shut down your creativity and productivity and you end up in self-preservation mode.
When however you can slip into the alpha state at will, you are able to cope better with stress, concentrate on tasks, see the possibilities, tap into your intuition and interact with others more easily.
When you are in Beta you can remind yourself all you want about positive thinking, visualization and positive affirmations, it won’t work. You have to be in the alpha-theta zone to change your subconscious thinking patterns, to rewire your brain and override the existing programming which was put in place in your early childhood and by past experiences.
If you want to feel less stress, burnout and anxiety, visit the alpha 2-3 times a day for 5-15 minutes. You will sleep better and maximize your mental and athletic performance.
So how do you get in alpha?
You can practice meditation, but that’s very intimidating to many of us.
